How to lower the cost of car insurance - Tips for teenagers

• It might be wise if the parents inform their insurance agent that their teenager is added to their own car insurance policy. On the other hand, deliberate concealment of this fact is likely to impact the insurance coverage. Most car insurance companies will not charge additional premium until the teenager gets a driving license.

• Being a diligent student might be the key to the lower cost of the car insurance. Good grades are not to be neglected. Most insurance companies offer a teenage car insurance discount, sometimes as high as 25%, for bright students.

• Experience on the road is also a key factor for teenage drivers. Teenagers are required by the law to have a minimum of 50 hours with an experienced driver, but many companies offer up to a 10% discount for teenagers who have taken a formal drivers training course.

• Drive safely. Beware of penalties. In case of drink-driving the driver can be deprived of the opportunity to get into his car again. Although death and injury are the highest cost the driver could pay, a D.U.I ticket for a teenager is a real disaster. Traffic crashes and citations will also affect the teenage car insurance premium. If a teenager is caught with more than three penalties, his driving license may not be renewed.

• Keep away from sports cars. They are often the target for thieves; maintenance is expensive and insurance costs for such high-performance vehicles are much higher. It might be a good idea to contact the insurance company to get a quote before buying a car.

• There is another, clearly social aspect to teenage car insurance. Statistically, young drivers are more likely to visit night clubs. This increases the risk of vandalism in addition to risks as overcrowding and drink-driving.

Teenage car insurance

Teenage car insurance is among the most expensive types of car insurance as young drivers are traditionally known as high-risk drivers and are demanded to pay extra premium. Teenager car insurance rates are based on how likely it is to get into a crash. Statistically, young drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident which increases the probability of having higher claims. Speed driving often connected with car accidents is said to be particularly popular among young male teenage drivers. And although it might not be true of all young men, this behavior is representative for the given demographic group, which makes claim costs higher. The age group representing the highest risk among young drivers is the male teenagers. Being the group with the highest claims frequency, it also has more expensive claims.

Several factors contributing to the higher cost of teenage car insurance policies

The higher accident frequency in the teenage male drivers group is due to the fact that their vehicles tend to be older and less maintained. Teenagers are often financially dependent on their parents. This often makes them unable to ensure the good maintenance of their cars which in turn makes the cars more likely to break.

• Another factor contributing to the higher average cost of insurance claims is the fact that in this demographic group there is a lower than average car ownership. Again, the financial pressure means that lots of teenagers cannot afford to buy a car. Often the car owner, who is most likely to be a student, has to transport a number of friends around. This is of particular concern to car insurers due to the risk of overloading.

• The personal injury aspect side is probably the most expensive aspect of car insurance by far. In case of a big accident, the number of passengers is determinative for the cost of the insurance claim. Passengers are particularly important as they are considered third parties in the event of an accident. The compensation opportunities for the driver are usually limited. The number of passengers is also connected to the overloading of the vehicle as an overloaded car is less stable and more likely to break thus increasing the risk of an accident.

Collision insurance coverage

Car collision coverage

Collision coverage is a type of coverage for the policy holder’s vehicle that has been involved in a car accident. It provides payment to repair the damaged vehicle or the cash equivalent of the motor vehicle in case it cannot be repaired. Collision coverage is not obligatory.

Comprehensive coverage

Auto comprehensive coverage is a type of coverage for the policy holder’s vehicle that has been damaged by incidents other than collision. It may refer to fire, theft, weather conditions, vandalism and other types of comprehensive losses.

Car insurance costs

As costs of different car insurance types can vary a lot depending on the insurance company, it may be smart to shop around and explore different opportunities. Before deciding on a car insurance policy, customers are advised to ask in the insurance

Coverage plan and common types of car insurance policies

Insurance coverage plans.

With regard to insurance coverage levels, there are several different categories of car insurance. In general, auto insurance can cover the insured party, the insured party’s vehicle and third parties (including cars and people). Coverage plans are logically connected to the type of coverage the insured party purchases. Usually, the risk covered is associated with the price of the service offered by insurance companies.

Liability coverage

Generally, liability insurance covers claims against the insured person and any other driver of the insured vehicles, provided that they do not share the same place of residence. However, in case the insured person and the other operator of the car are living at the same address, they must specifically be covered on the policy. Therefore, it makes it necessary when a family member comes of driving age that they are added to the policy. Sometimes liability insurance does not protect the insured person if they operate any vehicles other than their own. However, when a policy holder drives a vehicle owned by another person, they are covered under that other person’s policy. Liability coverage is generally extended when the insured person rents a car. Liability coverage is also offered for bodily injury and for property damage for which the policy holder is responsible. The amount of coverage is a fixed dollar sum, which can be extended for an additional charge.

There is an option to split the coverage or to get a combined policy which covers both bodily injury and property damage. The split coverage type is called Split limits policy. To illustrate the type of policy, an example can be given: when the insured driver strikes another vehicle and injures the driver and the passenger, payments for the other driver’s vehicle would be paid out under property damage coverage, and payments for the injuries would be paid out under bodily injury coverage. In the same situation, if the policy holder has a Combined Single Limit policy, both payments for the damaged property and for bodily injury would be paid under the same combined policy.

Auto insurance questions

What is Auto insurance ?

As its name implies, vehicle or auto insurance stands for insurance purchased for motor vehicles (cars, trucks etc.) with the primary purpose to provide protection against losses or/and liabilities incurred as a result of traffic accidents.

Public policy in the U.S. and vehicle insurance basics

Being compulsory in most states, however, car insurance is subject to enforcement which varies from state to state. In this regard two basic vehicle insurance models can be distinguished.
1. The ballpark model. Just like visitors to ballparks bear the risk of being hit by various objects such as balls and bats, the users of the ballpark vehicle insurance model bear the risk of driving and being hit by other participants in the traffic, who have neither insurance nor the means to pay for damages caused. New Hampshire’s lack of a requirement that motorists carry liability insurance is often associated with this type of system.
2. The Disneyland model. The name of this type of insurance system comes from the responsibility which the company managing the Disneyland parks bears in case an accident befalls its customer. As far as vehicle insurance is concerned, in this case as opposed to the ballpark model, users of the system bear no risk for damages caused by other participants in the traffic. The full liability is instead imposed upon the responsible party and/or their insurance company. This insurance system is often cited as a method of privatizing the licensure of motorists and their vehicles. Under this model the Arizona Department of Transportation recommended that car insurance companies issue license plates and bear the responsibility for the full cost of injuries caused by their clients. After expiry the license plates should be returned to the insurance office where licensees receive a refund on their insurance premiums.

Another relatively new initiative is the Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP) which is more popular as the Dollar a Day policy, which binds users of limited auto insurance coverage to the Federal Medicaid program. Under this initiative drivers can obtain a medical coverage-only policy for $365 a year. The service is primarily aimed at drivers who are likely to go uninsured due to limited finances. There is, however, one important condition under this insurance plan. People who are eligible for the SAIP are only those who are currently enrolled in Federal Medicaid with Hospitalization program.
This insurance policy covers emergency treatment following traffic accidents as well as treatment of serious brain and spinal cord injuries up to $250,000.
