Car rental
If you have already made your plans to travel, you probably know that the most cost effective, convenient and comfortable way is by car. Car rental is a huge business, not only in the U.S., but also worldwide and rates are very competitive. Before you book a car, you need some information in advance to help you make the best possible choice. Most rental companies require that you have a major credit card, as they usually do not accept debit cards. You should be at least 25 years old and you should have a valid driver’s license. Note that your local license will do. Several car rental companies may even rent to drivers between the ages 21 and 24 but they will ask for an additional charge. Those under 21 are usually not permitted to rent a car at all. These additional underage driving fees can reach up to $25 per day extra. If you have a bad driving record, you can be denied a car by the car rental agency. Some companies have also set maximum age limits. Ask about possible rental requirements and restrictions when you book to avoid troubles later. A few key questions on time can save you thousands of dollars. As car rental rates can vary more than airfares, you should first get informed if the weekly rate is cheaper than the daily rate. Often long-term car rental can save money. For example, you may need to keep the car for four days, but it may be cheaper to keep it for five, even if you don’t need it that long. In addition, there are car rental agencies that assess a drop-off charge if you do not return the car to the same location where you picked it up. The price also depends on the place where you choose to pick up the car – it may be cheaper to pick it up at the airport than downtown. Local and other taxes such as state use tax can be added to the rental bill. Some states’ rental-car taxes can top 25% of the base rate, so be sure you know exactly how much you will be paying before making a decision. The prize you pay usually depends on the size of the car, where and how far you drive it, whether you purchase insurance as well as a host of other factors. You should always comparison-shop and be persistent because reservations agents are not always inclined to share money-saving strategies.
